Inaugural Issue |
| This is the inaugural issue of the Web Farming
Newsletter. We will cover developments, both business and technology, in cultivating the
information resources of the Web for systematic business intelligence via the warehouse. This is your newsletter! Your suggestions and comments are an important part
of its content. In particular, the conversations in the WFC Discussion Forums will be highlighted, along with
reviews of innovative products and content service providers. |
New Website |
| Along with a new newsletter is a new website. Our intent
is to develop this site into the premier resource center for persons interested in web
farming. Take a look at http://webfarming.com/ and suggest some improvements. |
 |
Educational Program |
| A seminar-workshop combo series will be initiated this
spring. Professional seminars in various cities within North America will be offered. Dr.
Hackathorn will cover the breadth of web farming in three intense days. A description will
appear in the February issue. For companies moving to
the Getting Serious stage, a hands-on workshop will be offered in Boulder. Participants
will bring their laptops and connect into the net to create their initial web farms. The
goal is to create a detailed action plan to implement a web farming system customized to
their business situation. If interested, email info@webfarming.com. |

Intraspect Server |
| The Knowledge Server from Intraspect is under evaluation in the WFC lab. The product uses a nice
combination of URL and email addressing to universally identify every object within the
database. Thus, any web browser or email client becomes an interface. The Verity search
engine and the Objectivity database are under the hood, adding lots of embedded
functionality. It is a useful product for a workgroup to maintain a common knowledge base.
It is weak on tapping into external web resources. The installation went smoothly. The
only hitch was setting the proper DNS resolution for HTTP and SMTP services. Details will
be available next month. |
Seeking Partners |
| WFC is seeking partnerships with technology vendors of web
farming products (i.e., KM servers, web search, text mining, info visualization, XML/RMF
gateways). From the web farming perspective, we will objectively and honestly evaluate
these products and issue a report. The vendor has the option of reproducing and
distributing the evaluation report. These products will be used as illustrations in
professional seminars and hands-on workshops. If interested, email info@webfarming.com. |
