The CI Perspective

A recent chapter talk of the Society for Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) challenged basic assumptions about web farming. Must read!

Award from DM Review

Our website received the Editor's Choice Award from DM Review for providing "exceptional resources to the business intelligence and data warehouse industry."
  Editor's Choice Award from datawarehouse.com

High Web Usage for BI

In a survey of 446 CEO's of fast- growing companies ($1M to $40M in revenue), the Web is a major source of business information. 82% of high-tech companies use the Web as a "source of competitor information" while 73% use the Web as "a statistical or data resource." In addition, 68% use the Web to "obtain new sales leads" as compared to only 27% who "provide direct sales of products." Survey was reported in PricewaterhouseCoopers Trendsetter Barometer, Sept 1998.

Dow Jones Uses XML

Dow Jones Interactive is delivering its content via XML. In an article in Searcher Magazine, Tim Andrews, VP and Editor, sketch their XML usage within their DJ-Interactive Toolkit for corporate intranets. Andrews remarked that "one of the biggest challenges...is understanding how to effectively develop and apply technology...of the Web-based information process to enhance the way we organize, pinpoint, and access content." Sounds like web farming!

New BullsEye Version

IntelliSeek has released its new version 1.5 of BullsEye metasearch tool, allowing access into over 450 search resources. The new version allows users to save and share  search parameters and results, along with tracking changes. The basic Windows product is US$49, and the professional version is US$149. A free 30-day trial is available. Try It!

Resource of the Month

For the mother of all listings of search engines, see the Beaucoup site. With over 1,400 links, Teri Madden has Click to visit Beaucoup!performed a major task in compiling all of these resources. The links are categorized into: general, metasearch, media, geo-specific, language, art, and so forth. However, there is no description for each link and no way to search over these links.

EIP Revisited

Last month, we discussed EIP or Enterprise Information Portal as a customizable interface across disparate data sources for knowledge workers . Based on a Merrill Lynch analysis, this market is predicted to be $15B by 2002. Really!?

JCentral

JCentral is a unique search service is offerred by IBM. JCentral crawls the Web for Java objects and summarizes them based on Java-specific attributes, such as class name, interfaces, and methods. JCentral is an offspring of IBM's Grand Central Station (GCS) project, which puts smarts into web crawling technology and uses XML/RDF for data flows. JCentral currently manages over 500,000 Java objects. Try the Power Search, and note the various search parameters.

RDF Recommendation

W3C has approved the latest RDF (Resource Description Framework) specifications as a recommendation, implying that they are stable for product development. This is a major step forward for web farming! Based on XML, RDF allows complex data interchange by sharing the metadata for generic content domains. In useful ways, RDF restricts XML so that statements consist of triplets (two objects with a relation), making the parsing of RDF statements less ambiguous.

Decision Processing

Colin White of DataBase Associates has defined the next generation of data warehousing in his architecture for Decision Processing. Visit his new website and see the About DP section.

Microsoft with KM Product?

Smart Reseller rumored that Microsoft would enter the Knowledge Management (KM) market with two applications running on Windows 2000. The code names are Tahoe and Polar. Tahoe will be the successor to Site Server 3.0 and will include document management and search features as well as XML support for indexing documents. The Polar server will include features from Tahoe, SQL Server and Exchange Server, perhaps including SQL Server workflow features (code-named Grizzly). Microsoft has not confirmed this rumor. A KM World article offered a summary: "Don't hold your breath; it will be three years before a real product release."

WF Seminars Scheduled

A seminar series on web farming will initiate on June 23-25 in Chicago. DCI is sponsoring the series, and Richard Hackathorn will be conducting the three-day professional seminars. Details will be in next issue.
